Los Angeles
Cultural Heart of America

Over the years, many things have been said about Los Angeles and its surrounding counties. Ranging from sensationalistic articles about crime in the European press, to everyday writings about its glitterati, few other areas in the world have generated as much media interest.

None of this is surprising, of course - after all, most of America's omnipresent movie industry is headquartered here, together with a good share of the music industry. The more I saw, the more convinced I became of that this melting pot of 10 million people, or 3.5% of America's population, may have been the birthplace of much of the culture America and the world is now calling its own.

As an aside, having grown up in Finland, I always thought convertible cars were somewhat pointless. They seemed truly useful only for a few weeks each year. In Los Angeles, however, a convertible car made perfect sense - not least because the area only has roughly a dozen rainy days per year.

Hollywood Star Lanes
The Hollywood Star Lanes bowling hall has gained popularity with a wide range of clients. You can basically run into anyone from movie people and downtown businesspeople to students and police officers who appreciate its 24h availability. This very bowlin . . More..

E3 II
Another view from the Electronic Entertainment Exposition. Notice the mounted nightclub-like lights in the roof.

Tender bar
Hotel Figueroa demonstrated various interesting Arabic influences, including these traditional Moroccan lampholders, washing the second floor bar in their muted orange glow.

Pool reflections
Reflecting on the trade show by a pool, the pool reflected some nearby illumination.

At the edge of paradise
Below the edge of Santa Monica's Palisade Park lies the beach. Further away, the Santa Monica Pier can be seen. On this clear day, the sea had gathered a number of sailboats just off the shore.

Palisade Park II
One detail that struck me about Santa Monica's Palisade Park was just how high some of the palm trees reached. This vertical panorama shot is my attempt to capture this detail.

Santa Monica Pier
Santa Monica Pier houses a great Mexican restaurant and a small amusement park. The pier is also the stage for a symbiotic relationship between tourists and street performers. Donations are solicited by acts ranging from basic acrobatics to soap bubble bl . . More..

Walkway vendors
Santa Monica Pier hosts a number of street vendors, peddling various inexpensive items to the tourists.

Seashell eyes
This is a seashell's perspective of Santa Monica Beach. Positioned on the edge to the adjacent Venice Beach, Santa Monica's skyline emerges on the far right.

Light pollution
These three exposures of an intersection's traffic lights demonstrate how certain lights in our carefully delegated environment affect the accumulation and nature of others.

Santa Moonica
This panoramic exposure captured the post-sunset atmospheric glow at its most colourful peak, with the lights of the Santa Monica Pier's amusement park and the oceanfront hotels adding to the composition.

Rodeo Drive
Rodeo Drive - the most expensive shopping street in Los Angeles, catering to the most affluent local residents. The shops aligning the street constitute a 'who's who' of the fashion world.

Mann's Chinese Theater
One of the many traditional tourist traps of Los Angeles is Mann's Chinese Theater, these days looking somewhat unassuming among newer and more grandiose buildings nearby. This building by Hollywood's Walk of Fame has a long history, however, and hosts a . . More..

Universal Studios
You could be excused for thinking LA stands for Lights All-over, because locations such as the Universal Studios theme park are awash by artificial illumination

E3 Expo
The Electronic Entertainment Exposition, also known as 'E3', is one of the biggest annual computer industry-related trade shows. Staged in the Staples Convetion Center of Los Angeles, the show fills the numerous exhibition halls and rooms in the complex t . . More..

Defying mother nature
This being California, and California being prone to earthquakes, buildings have good contingency support structures. This is also true for the Staples Convention Center. In this picture you can see various support beam structures, designed to hold a tran . . More..

Downtown LA
Downtown Los Angeles highlighted the stark contrast between rich and poor in America. Just blocks away from the astronomically expensive office buildings, you can find one of the biggest congregations of homeless people in America. The further away you ge . . More..

Palisade Park I
Here is a wide horizontal panorama image of the beautiful Palisade Park. The park stretches out for miles, and offers a bit of shade from the unrelenting sun to locals and tourists alike. The grass, plants and trees are carefully manicured and groomed, ju . . More..

Palmenglow
The atmospheric conditions at this warm oceanshore cause some interesting illumination effects from time to time. On this day, with enough reflective moisture having accumulated in the haze, the sun's rays were markedly diffused by the time they reached t . . More..

Sunset
A fairly straightforward sunset exposure, captured from Santa Monica Pier's observation deck. South California sunsets were generally fairly uniform in appearance, so sunset photography quickly became a somewhat redundant exercise.

Third Street Promenade
Not too far away from the pier is Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade, a bit of an extended shopping mall built around a pedestrian street. The Promenade offered everything from movie theatres to restaurants to expensive boutiques.

Suburban homes
The homes and streets of Santa Monica are well maintained, and even the streets are cleaned on a weekly basis. Here is a view down a residential street near Brentwood.

Hitting the street
On this stretch of the Wilshire Blvd I experienced a most remarkable encounter. There I was, casually perambulating with my camera and tripod, when I noticed a middle-aged, well-dressed woman in my path. At the next moment, still some 15 feet away, she su . . More..

Roller coaster
This panorama is one of several I snapped while observing this Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park from a high vantage point.

Educational perspective
I was fortunate enough to be invited to a middle school's end-of-term ceremony. Whereas I captured it from many different angles, I found this distant low angle shot to be the most interesting.

Bass street
Because of the size of Los Angeles, a lot of its culture seems to be based on movement. It is therefore natural that people also invest a fair bit of resources on vehicles and sound systems. Whereas the city supposedly has some regulations regarding noise . . More..
